How Can severe Headache In A Child Be Treated?

My 4 year old was complaining that his head hurt 3 days ago. It was sensitive to even touch the sides of his head, and he said it was hurting inside his head. Now for the last two nights he has not complained about his head but has vomited both nights. My younger brother has had migraines since he was 3 years old. I m planning on scheduling a doctors appointment, but I m open to suggestions. Could it be allergies? I m concerned either way.

Hi,

A migraine is a frequent cause of a recurrent headache in young children. Vomiting is associated with the headaches and there can be sensitivity to sound and to light, stomach pain, and irritability. A family history of a migraine is often present.

Sleep relieves the pain. First-line medicines are Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen.

To make the diagnosis of a migraine in your son it would be best to follow his progress for a month to see how frequent his headaches are and if there are any other associated symptoms.

Worrisome symptoms are falling, eye movements that are not symmetric, and weight loss. If any of these occur, he needs to be seen by his physician as soon as possible.

These headaches are not due to allergies. Signs of allergy include:
- Red eyes.
- Itchy eyes and nose.
- A runny nose.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Arnold Zedd,
